Prolotherapy for Chronic Low Back Pain
Kim Don-Kyu

Seo Kyung-Mook
Abstract
There are numerous approaches to the evaluation and treatment of chronic low back pain. Prolotherapy is an injection procedure designed to stimulate repair of degenerated and damaged soft tissue structures such as ligament and teno-osseous junctions. Stability of the spine is largely supported by surrounding soft tissue structures, such as ligaments and muscles. These are important structures which contribute not only to maintaining normal function but also in developing pathological or painful conditions. In a large portion of patients with chronic pain, dysfunction of the fibro-osseous junction (ligament attached site to bone) and teno-osseous junction (tendon insertion site to bone) are the underlying pathology. Treatment of such soft tissue structures with prolotherapy may be effective for patients complaining of chronic back pain when performed by a well-trained physician following thorough evaluation and examination.
